Safety is #1Target Zero For us, success is ‘Target Zero.’ No accidents. No injuries. No errors. Ever. Several years ago, we were seeing more injuries than seemed acceptable. But, in our industry or as an Employer of Choice, what is acceptable? The answer was found in our numerous employees who have never had an accident, and have never been injured at work. Based on their example, ‘Target Zero’ became our goal. Target Zero requires anyone working here to be a safety leader. These are individuals that know we do not have to have injuries and that they can lead the way. Leadership is shown by setting a safe example, maintaining the expectation that no injuries are acceptable and Zero injuries are possible. They have to a Purpose, preventing injuries. They have to be Positive, believing that Target Zero can happen, They have to be Persuasive, convincing others to be safe. Finally they have to be Persistent, always keeping to the goal. LIONS Apache workers adopted the employee-driven Behavioral Accident Prevention Process® (BAPP). This process has since become our way of life. Safe behavior is reinforced, while behavior that puts us at risk is systematically eliminated. The process is further strengthened by our complete confidence that zero is a realistic goal. Simply put, we all know that un-safe behaviors happen. Through a process of employees observing each other in a no name - no blame situation, we can identify those behaviors. Once the un-safe behaviors have been identified, a committee made up of our employees devises ways to eliminate those behaviors. When the un-safe behaviors have been corrected, injuries are prevented. Our process known as LIONS (Learning Implementing and Observing Network Safety) has been very successful preventing injuries and improving safety. |
