Job Opportunities

In 2009, Apache Nitrogen Products, Inc. (ANPI), had a staff of 100 employees, made up of Plant Operators, Maintenance Technicians, and Management, Professional, and Administrative support personnel. Plant Operators and Maintenance Technicians are represented by the International Chemical Workers Union Council of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local No. 184-C. Approximately half of the 100 employees make up the represented bargaining unit.

While employee turnover is limited, ANPI does occasionally have a need to hire new employees. Our process for filling open positions is to first consider internal candidates, either by utilizing the formal bidding process for bargaining unit openings, or internal interviews for non bargaining unit openings. If openings are not filled via this process, ANPI relies on walk-in applications/resumes, newspaper advertisements, word of mouth, employee referrals, temporary labor firm temp-to-hire opportunities, and professional recruiters to identify candidates.

Once several candidates are identified, ANPI often relies on a panel interview process, where a cross-section panel of current employees interview the candidates and make hiring recommendations to the Human Resources Department. The HR Department, in concert with the hiring manager and/or the ANPI Executive Team, makes the final hiring decision. Formal written offer letters to candidates include notification that the candidate must pass a pre-employment physical which includes a Functional Capacity Exam (FCE), and a drug and alcohol test. The FCE is a one hour physical fitness test that evaluates whether a candidate can perform the physical requirements of the job.

Some of the more common openings at ANPI include the following occupations and basic qualifications:

Entry Level Operator – High School Diploma, ability to read, write, and understand English, and willingness to work with hazardous chemicals in an outdoor environrnent that can be very hot, cold, and wet. This person must be capable of learning and retaining a large amount of technical information in a short period. Typically, an entry level Operator will become fully qualified as a Plant Operator after three to six months of book study and review, hands-on job shadowing, and many hours of repetitive training. To become qualified, the Operator must pass both a written exam and a plant walk-through with a highly qualified and experienced Supervisor to demonstrate hands-on knowledge.

Journeyman Maintenance Technician - High School Diploma, ability to read, write, and understand English, and willingness to work with hazardous chemicals. Formal Union-documented Journeyman certification, or similar documented knowledge and experience as determined by ANPI. Passing a written and hands-on test demonstrating knowledge and ability. A Technician can be any of the following crafts: Electrician, Instrument Tech, Welder/Pipefitter, or Mechanic/Machinist.

Administrative Clerk - High School Diploma, and the ability to read, write, and understand English. Typically, experience is being sought in one or more of the following skills: phone receptionist, secretarial, accounting bookkeeping, customer service, or payroll/benefits.

Job Applications must be completed in full by the applicant at the offices of the Company, at 1436 S. Apache Powder Road, near St. David Arizona, between 8am and 4pm, Monday through Friday.

Our Management and Bargaining Unit work together to build and maintain a climate of cooperation, anchored in a sound safety process. A Collaborative Bargaining Process plays a key role in every aspect of our business. A committee, which includes Union Officers and Executive Staff members, meets regularly to address issues involving every aspect of plant working conditions and the labor agreement. In addition, we include Bargaining Unit employees on teams that provide input on selection of new employees and supervisors. As a result of employee involvement, the few grievances we experience are typically resolved in a positive manner.

We maintain a strong leadership program. All supervisors and professionals have received 40 to 60 hours of training, with a focus on leadership, as well as management. Our Union Officers and their international representative also participate.

All other employees receive 8 to 24 hours training annually in related areas. We also work closely with our community. The Apache Community Advisory Committee (ACAC) consists of about twenty of our neighbors from St. David, Benson and outlying regions. This group meets twice annually to identify and address community concerns, and help Apache meet our community’s needs.
