Apache’s environmental stewardship and mission to improve the environment resulted in new technology. Our acid plants operate with state-of-the-art technology to prevent release of pollutants to the air. However, these systems are only effective when the plants are running at normal operating temperatures and pressures. This means that, historically, emissions have been higher during the plant startup process. A new system, recently installed, injects hydrogen peroxide into the plant’s absorption system during startup. As a result, we routinely achieve startup without emission excursions. This installation, the first of its kind in our industry, was presented as a project to an international audience of peer producers in 2002.
