Community Warning Siren Update

Apache Nitrogen Products, Inc., located seven miles south of Benson, Arizona, will test a new and improved Community Warning Siren on Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at 1:00 P.M. The improved siren may reach areas where it has not been heard in the past. Apache has maintained a Community Warning Siren for many years in the unlikely event a major incident requires notification to nearby residents and businesses. The siren is tested each Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 P.M., to assure its operation and to allow neighbors to become familiar with it.

Because some nearby neighbors have commented to Apache that they don't always hear the test if they are inside their homes with televisions, radios, or other sources of noise, Apache committed to increasing the effectiveness of the siren. There are two sirens on Apache property; a 7 horsepower unit, and a 15 horsepower unit. Our first step has been to replace the 15 horsepower unit with a 40 horsepower unit. Our second step will be to move the current 15 horsepower unit to replace the 7 horsepower unit. The second step will occur in the next few months.

Apache is pleased to provide this improved capability for notifying nearby neighbors of any major incidents at Apache. Fortunately, the siren has only been utilized one time over the last 15 years. If anyone has questions regarding the siren or other issues at Apache, Lyndon Denton can be contacted at 520-720-2190.
